Tulum Travel Guide

February 22, 2016 | Leave a Comment

mexico_enroute_tulum

Heyhey! It’s been two weeks since my holiday to Tulum and I’d love to share with you how it all went down… When I researched this vacation I haven’t found as much information as I’d have liked so my hope is that this might help some of you planning your perfect mexican vacation, because you should definitely go!!! 🙂 I absolutely loved Mexcio and Tulum, you all know I’m a chronic wanderluster, but there are only very few places I’d go back (vs trying out a new location) and Tulum is certainly one of these! We only spent 8 days under the mexican sun, but here is everything I’ve seen and learned along the way:

Tulum is a place to visit if you’re in for an active vacation! There are so many things to do, but you can also be perfectly content not doing anything at all if that makes sense. The Caribbean sea is just gorgeous and the sand has this unreal white color to it. Tulum is often called the Ibiza of the Caribbean and I can certainly see why! (and no, it’s not because of the parties! there isn’t much of those… 🙂 ) Juice bars, yoga retreats and healthy new age restaurants are all the craze in the fitness conscious fashion crowd here, while at night the jungle side snizzles with lights and exotic, megacool restaurants. If  not Ibiza, it could also be the Williamsburg of the Caribbean. We traveled there early February and had some beautifully sunny days, some crazy windy days and a few cloudy ones too… I hear April/May is the best time to go in case you’re wondering! 🙂

Where to stay

Luckily Tulum has something for everyone and mass tourism is relatively still unknown here. There are no huge hotels here, only small chic beach cabanas and bungalows.

We stayed at Rosa Del Viento which is at a quiet part of the beach. Pros would be the amazing views from our ocean view bungalow, the super friendly staff and the prettiness of the beach here as its just on the edge of the Sian Kaan nature reserve. Negative would be that you have to walk a few kilometres to get close to the bars and restaurants, but if you rent a bike its all very easy peasy and taxis are cheap too.

A few other hotels that caught my attention were Be Tulum, Sanara (amazing health food restaurant and yoga room) and Mi Amor.

Where to eat

Here comes one of my main cons of Tulum, eating out every day can be very very expensive (compared to Spanish standards at least) and finding authentic Mexican food can be a challenge. We went all the way to Tulum town to try the real Mexican flavours at Don Cafeto… NOTHING fancy, just great food and authentic barrio feeling, we also loved spending time at a live music concert in the garden of Batey.

On the beach we loved the atmosphere of Cenzontle, Casa Banana and Gitano but spent one of the coolest evening in the small taco beach shack of La Eufemia.

What to do

One of the reasons for me to go back will be to go diving, which I didn’t get a chance to do this time, although it’s supposed to be amazing.

We did visit one of the cenotes (underground river) which was one of the highlights of the trip by far. These fresh water lakes and caves are part of an almost 7000km underground river network, parts of which they are just discovering now, prehistoric rock formations and cool animal life… we visited Sac Actun which was amazing and I’d very highly recommend. It was just me & mr with a guide, no other tourists so it was a very unique experience!

One day we rented bikes and rode all the way to the Mayan ruins on the beach which is a must, after which we climbed the pyramid of Koba and bartered with the sellers on the little artesanal shops on the side of the rode for an amazing black dream catcher! 🙂

For shopping I’d definitely recommend getting into Tulum town as the selection and prices are much better than that on the beach.

Don’t miss out on the amazing yoga classes either, I had one in Yaan in a treehouse in the jungle, pure bliss!

Apart from that our run in on the beach in the sunrise was a definite highlight that set the tone for the whole vacay. 🙂

That’s it! Now pack and go! 🙂 Any questions just let me know in your comments

p.s: here is a teaser of an engagement session I photographed while in Tulum… 🙂 can’t wait to show you the rest!

p.p.s: anyone getting married in Mexico? TAKE ME WITH YOU! 😀

Wedding Wednesday: Ibiza Wedding Photography | Sandra & Stuart

February 17, 2016 | Leave a Comment

In what must have been the hottest day of 2015, Sandra and Stuart invited me to photograph their wedding party in Ibiza. They are one of those impossibly good looking couples whose wedding looked like a beautiful Ibiza styled shoot (don’t you just adore Sandra’s Charo Ruiz dress?) rather than a formal event, where we skipped around the forest while the family was chilling in shades, ate the delicious family styled barbecue all together and partied until the wee hours. S&S are not only clients but friends as well, so it was extra special for me to document a wedding where I knew lot of the invitees so once the camera was put down I could take on the dance floor as well.. so Ibiza! 🙂 Thank you beautiful people for letting me document your beautiful day… Can’t wait to meet up soon again!

Wedding Wednesday: Pageo Lavender Farm Wedding | Orsi & Anthony

I am a very lucky person. I have amazing clients who flew me all over the world, but what’s more I have amazing friends too who flew me all over the world for their weddings too. I met Orsi while I was in university in Hungary, it seems like it was a lifetime ago, it feels like it was yesterday. You know those friends who live so far away, those you don’t get to talk to as much as you’d like too, but whenever you manage to be in the same city you’re so excited to catch up?! She’s one of those friends and it has been my upmost pleasure to see her blossom and become the happiest woman by the side of Anthony, her MBA sweetheart.

They fell in love in Michigan & then moved west to San Francisco… they planned one of the most perfect weddings I’ve ever had the pleasure to photograph. I mean, Pageo Lavender Farm is just a dream location to start with, but then Orsi’s Vera Wang dress simply took my breath away, so did the grey-yellow movie themed set up of the whole event. Every single detail was just perfect, from the truck to the flowers, to the games…. IT WAS HOT, I mean California desert in June is no joke… both boy these two would have been sizzling in the middle of a snow storm as well…but all the prettiness, the emotional speeches and the coolest dances aside, my favourite part was their “first look without looking”.

Ladies & gents…. it was everything!!! Orsi & Anthony decided to write letters to each other about how they felt, what the past years have meant and what do they hope for their future… then we carefully arranged that they could read their letters to each other without seeing each other in the convenient cover of a barn door. Holy GUACAMOLE!!!! I was crying so much, they were laugh-crying so much, it was one of my favourite moments of the entire wedding season of 2015. And after hearing the beautiful words moments before tying the knot imagine how they felt not being able to see each other… a little hand holding was allowed, but that’s it… then it was time for their story to begin….

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU a million times per guys for letting me document such intimate and once in a lifetime moments of your story. I’ll never forget it.

Bridal Hair Trends for 2016

February 8, 2016 | Leave a Comment

barcelona-portrait-photographer-enroute_0001

One of the most important decision when it comes to your bridal look (apart from THE dress of course) is what hair and makeup you should be going for that not only accentuates your beauty but makes you look fresh, modern but timeless at the same time. I enlisted the help of some of my favourite beauty girls in Barcelona to give you some of their tips for 2016! First up Laura McCosh, who has been the hair stylist of about 90% of my Barcelona brides last year (and my personal hairdresser) to share some of her insight… enjoy!

So you ask me what will be trending for this years weddings..

Let’s look at where most trends are set… Catwalks! There has been some amazing bridal hair looks set on the catwalk for 2016 that you can steal and make your own for your big day. Here is a link below if you fancy taking a look:http://weddingjournalonline.com/hot-off-the-runway-ny-bridal-2016-trends/

I feel the catwalk trends still have some romance and boheimian styles going on but with a touch more of sophistication and simplicity to them.
If you wish to dress up your style more try adding some gorgeous hair accessories to complement your style. Wether that be butterfly clips, flowers or a simple decorative headband to compliment some soft waves like the Jenny Packham image below (One of my ultimate faves with a soft half wave and a simple but elegant headband)

Screen Shot 2016-01-26 at 16.28.05

In my opinion when it comes to your special day, it is good to take inspiration from the catwalks, magazines etc but most importantly, you must take a look at your dress, your flowers and the general style of your wedding.  At the end of the day you don’t want to be looking back on pictures or worse not feeling like yourself on your special day because you have copied a specific look from a picture or catwalk trend.

Everyone wants to be timeless in their photos and the best way to do that is to stay true to yourself.

So there is no right or wrong in what you should do with your hair on your special day as you are unique and no one is like you. So don’t stress or strain on your look, just be the best version of yourself!

Formentera Wedding Photography

Formentera is one of those lesser known magical places that you can´t help but fall in love with and I can hardly imagine a better place to tie the knot than here! And its not only the crystal blue waters or the perfectly pastel sunsets…. it´s something…. more! Elena & Alban after meeting in Barcelona for the first time decided to come back to Spain to get married too and took their people along for the journey. The couple who now resides in beautiful Switzerland told their story and some of their wedding planning advice on Fly Away Bride here. I loved how their wedding was a true cocktail of their every day life with both Russian (Elena) & swiss accents and their love for Formentera…  Thank you E&A for taking me along the journey to document your love!
