2015 the year of balance

January 9, 2016 | Leave a Comment

Today is the day I officially started missing the wedding season! It’s been two and a half months since my last wedding and while that time was productively spent with delivering all the photographs to my clients, attending workshops, shooting family and engagement sessions, designing albums and meeting new dream clients for 2016, I miss all the excitement of the summer months. While my first wedding of 2016 is still a few months away, one of my new year goals is to catch up on my blogging in the meantime and show you most of my beautifully awesome 2015 weddings (and just a few more from 2014! :)).

Above is just the tiniest peek of what’s to come here on the blog… 2015 you really were a good one, and I have this group of beautiful people and the top notch vendors I got to work with to thank for that so THANK YOU… I sincerely loved each and every one of my weddings and each and every one of my couples!!! From small elopements to huge celebrity weddings and everything else in between it’s been a rainbow of crazy cool weddings for my crazy cool international couples from all over the world.

2015 was an amazing year in so many ways, I got to really enjoy my work as a wedding photographer and I flew all over from San Francisco to Norway, from Antibes to Formentera and I got to spend quite some time on my beloved Ibiza as well, while I got just the right balance of being away and enjoying life at home in Barcelona, which was something I have struggled sometimes in the past. I spent much more time with my family, my friends and focused on getting much more quality time with them as well… I enjoyed long afternoons horse riding and way too early mornings boxing and running, started painting a little and enjoyed some creative personal projects which truly helped creating that much sought after balance in my life that creative female entrepreneurs so often lack.

I also completely rebranded En Route, my website and the blog and have turned my Instagram into my visual diary.  Another huge business progress was that I seriously started shooting analogue film and tried different formats and cameras which now I fully integrated in my work flow, so yes, I am officially a  film photographer now and it makes me very happy to say that… this was a big step that I wanted to make from day one, so it is a big accomplishment that I got to do it and I have so many people that helped me get there, Pia, Birgit, Isabelle, Siegrid, Miguel, Ana… thank YOU!!!

I have not only learned a lot but started passing on what I know as well and as a result I got to present on two marketing workshops and started some private mentoring too which is something I am hoping aiming to do a lot more of this year. While 2015 was an awesome year, a fun year, a balanced year, 2016 is screaming for more. BIG GOALS, BIG DREAMS, BIG CHALLENGES…. I want to push my boundaries, I want to stretch and go for it and I want to  have the best time doing it… my list of goals is very long, the longest I ever did actually and even if I won’t get to cross each one of them off, I rather try and fail than never have tried. 2016, let’s go and kick 2015’s butt!

Bohemia Gathering Valencia

November 26, 2015 | Leave a Comment

barcelona-wedding-photographer-bohemia-gathering-enroute-photography_0017

A few weeks ago I packed my little suitcase and camera bag and headed to Valencia to meet some of my favourite European film photographers + new inspiring colleagues and to hang out at the headquarters of my film developer family, Carmencita Film Lab.

We spent 5 super inspiring and refreshing days in the middle of chufa fields in an old farm house, which felt a little bit like a super secret girls club (or a harem as we liked to joke :)). It’s not often that you get the chance to forget about the everyday routine, to not have wifi, to share, to learn, to look inside yourself and to ask the questions you never seem to ask…  AND to shoot film… just for myself, just for the joy of it, just to make mistakes and realise that it’s ok and the pictures are even great screw ups included experiment, to grow…

At the end of the wedding season right after my last wedding it was just what my wandering, restless soul needed, to disconnect, recharge and to come out with a deeper understanding of where I am on my journey and most importantly on where am I going. I have talked about film before and I’ve always promised to go more deep into why I decided to shoot it next to my digital work, but that hasn’t happened yet… all I can say is that it’s coming! 🙂 But for now, for the first time, with tiny butterflies in my stomach I dare say… I AM A FILM PHOTOGRAPHER! 🙂

Apart from the bonding, soulful experience the gathering was, it was also my time to fall in love with double exposures… something I always wanted to learn more about, experiment with and finally trying it for the first time has convinced me that it’s something I’m absolutely passionate about. There is just something about visually mixing two worlds together that makes my insides warm and fuzzy… that feeling of creating not just a photograph but pure art! Thank you Siegrid and Isabelle for showing me your tricks!

I’ve met Miguel Varona before he started Carmencita, which became the premiere film lab of Europe in recent years. He was the first European film photographer I’ve known, the first one to give me advice and push to pick up this medium, the first person whose workshop I attended and I’ll forever be grateful for his kindness and help. When he started Carmencita everyone knew he was onto something and I personally couldn’t wait to visit him and his superb team which became the epitome of über-cool in the European film industry. Not only did I want to meet the team which does an incredible job in the background making our film images look the way they do, but I really wanted to understand what’s going on behind the scenes, how is my film developed, scanned and corrected. After getting a small taste of it, my appreciation for the lab has only grown… SO MUCH WORK!!!! 🙂

Last but most importantly, the absolute bestest part of the Bohemia Gathering… my fellow attendees and the two fabulous, kind and all around awesome organisers, Isabelle and Siegrid. Thank you for your kind words, thank you for your openness, thank you for your tears and thank you for your friendship. We’re in touch forever. I am proud to be a Bohemia Girl! 🙂

My top 10 favourite engagement session locations in Barcelona

November 18, 2015 | Leave a Comment

Barcelona is becoming increasingly popular as an engagement session (or as some call it pre wedding photoshoot) location for people from all over the world. Some of them take advantage of their holidays in my beautiful city to make different engagement photos from everyone else’s at home (best holiday photos ever too… just sayin’) while others fly to Barcelona for the sole purpose of taking these oh so special photographs. I have been lucky enough to meet couples from all over the world and play not only photographer but tourist guide/host to them as well on our sessions (you know how much I love raving about Barcelona… but in case you haven’t see my guide yet, it’s right here! :))  One of the things my clients always struggle with while planning their sessions from abroad, is where to do the photos and it’s always a tricky question to answer. In a city like Barcelona the choices are endless, we have the beach, the mountains, parks, beautiful modernist architecture and the list of places is literally endless.

I always encourage my couples to choose a location that is meaningful to them… they might not live in Barcelona but they maybe have dreamed of visiting the Parc Guell all their lives, so be it! Some of them love spending time on the beach, some of them like cafes and restaurants… you get the idea. While my job is to advise them, in the end they, YOU have to make the decision… so I decided to write this article to merely highlight my personal top 10 favourite places for engagement sessions in Barcelona with the hope it might help you choosing your favourite location for your shoot. I hope you’ll find it useful, inspiring or at least gives you the travel lust to come and visit… so here we go.

  1. Parc Güell (Gaudi’s Park)

wedding-photographer-barcelona-parc-guell-en-route-photography

Hands down my personal favourite location. This place for me encompasses everything that Barcelona is. Amazing views, Gaudi architecture, lush gardens and…. waaaaaayyy too many tourists. While I love this location and I shoot here very often, I do have to warn you that it’s not the least intimate so if you’re a bit shy and don’t like to hug or kiss in front of people, maybe another location would be better suited. If however you don’t mind a bit of waiting around between shots to find the perfect, empty bench or column to create some iconic photographs, this might just be the place for you!

2. El Barrio Gotico (the Gothic Quarter)

barcelona engagement photographer

If I say 2 out 3 couples would like to shoot here I don’t think I am exaggerating too much. And why wouldn’t they? It’s the Barcelona of the postcards, little alleyways, romantic streets, cobblestone walkways, pretty pretty and pretty…. but wait! In this equation pretty equals busssssssy too!!!! While certain areas of the Gothic quarter are fairly unknown some others are buzzing with people and it’s literally impossible to take a photograph without anyone else in it, unless we go very early in the morning or on a national holiday! 🙂 During Danielle & John’s engagement session we got very lucky, it was a national holiday 🙂 If you don’t mind the buzz, the people and you’re happy to get lost in between them and maybe pop in to a few cute cafes and shops along the way too, it could be the perfect Barcelona lifestyle shoot!

3. Barceloneta

barceloneta-engagement-session-barcelona-enroute-photography_0001

My old barrio! Beach, colourful streets, palm trees, fancy bars, surfer dudes and skating paradise. If you’re looking for something more hip (dare I even say hipster), colourful and enchanting Barceloneta could be your place to go! Here is one cute little shoot as an example (also the second part of this one!)

4. Parc del Laberinto

barcelona-engagement-photography

Ah the labyrinth! This is a little bit of a secret place, or let’s say it was until all the barcelona photographers discovered it and started shooting there and thus spreading the news about it. It is a beautiful, huge, perfectly manicured park on the north of the city, off the beaten path. You do find pretty buildings, fountains, chic stone benches and oh well of course… the labyrinth, but while most of the other parks of the city can be overcrowded especially in peak season in the summer, the labyrinth park is virtually empty all year long. I’ve had about 5-10 sessions here in the last 4 years and not once have I met more than a handful visitors apart from us. If you like peace, quiet, romance and beauty I think you’ll like this place. (oh and the golden hour light here is JUST delicious). Here is the link to one of my favourite sessions from this beautiful place and here is my friend Esther’s beautiful little family also shot at the same place. The only negative I would mention that it’s not screaming Barcelona at you… so if you’re looking to show off that you were here, this might not be your jam.

5. Sitges

Barcelona Engagement Session, Sitges Engagement Session

A hop and a throw and a 30 minute train ride away you will find the quaint little beach town of Sitges, which has become a trendy little hot spot in the last decade for fun loving, Spanish architecture adoring beach bums (like myself! :)). Sitges is also known for being a popular wedding location, where I personally get to work a lot in the summer, so it’s only natural that it’s a fun place for a relaxed, beachy and beautiful engagement session too. Here is how Joan and Paul made Sitges look very cool.

6. Costa Brava

costa-brava-wedding-photographer-enroute-photography

A bit of a bigger hop and a longer throw away you’ll fall in love with the little fisherman villages, dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches of the Costa Brava. Just a little over an hour by car, but a truly mediterranean dream location for an engagement session.

7. Montserrat

montserrat_enroute_0016

I know if you think of Barcelona you don’t necessarily think of mountains straight away, but we do have them and quite a lot of them! One of my favourite, close to Barcelona hiking and marvelling spot is Montserrat….. if you’re an active couple loving adventure, big hikes, cozy blankets and dramatic ranges this could be the perfect spot for you!

8. Parc de La Ciutadella

barcelona engagement session, parc de la ciutadella, proposal barcelona, pre wedding barcelona

I practically live in the Parc de la Ciutadella…… this is where I walk Marley every day, where I work out and go for runs, where I read books in the sun, there is hardly a day I don’t pass by so I know this  not-so-well-known little gem like the back of my hand and would love to show you some of it’s beautiful spots as well… Dani and Claudia loved it too! 🙂

9. Tibidabo

barcelona-engagement-session-tibidabo-enroute-photography_0001Similar to my number one Parc Guell, Tibidabo – majestically looking over Barcelona – provides an amazing viewpoint of the city and a beautiful vintage fun park to get lost in (remember Vicky Cristina Barcelona?). While it takes just a little bit more planning to get to, the views and atmosphere are so so worth it.

10. Montjuic

en route photography, barcelona wedding photography, barcelona engagement photography

This little hill on the south border of the city might just be the most diverse but most underused location for photoshoots in Barcelona. The list of things to do here is very long…. there are the olympic stadiums, a horse riding staple, the magic fountains, a cactus garden and my personal favourite, the Poble Espanyol. I could write a long article just about Montjuic and why it is so beautiful, but my dear friend Google has all the pretty on it, so just consider it would you? 🙂 Here are a few images from Atsu & Nami’s engagement session party shot at Poble Espanyol.

You know I really thought coming up with 10 locations might be hard, but in fact I haven’t even mentioned the grungy cool Raval, the port, the forests around town, or even my favourite hotel roof terraces……. Choosing location is not easy but I hope this article has helped you plan your dream session in Barcelona! Good luck!

My Barcelona Guide

May 26, 2015 | 5 Comments

I am so very happy to be able to share this labor of love with you today!!! It’s been almost four years that I moved to Barcelona to become a wedding photographer and I can honestly say that it’s been the best four years of my life! I found my new home, family, profession, passion and I have become (or at least in my mind! :)) a Barcelona ambassador of sorts! In these past few years many of my clients, online and real life friends have been asking me for recommendations, so after countless way too long emails I decided it’s time to put something prettier together for you guys! This is not a step by step tourist guide, this is just a few of my favourite things, favourite places and hangouts in my beloved city! I hope you’ll enjoy reading through its pages, try a few things (& then let me know how was it) and share it with your friends if they are frolicking around in this part of the world too. Without further ado, I present you….. (drum rolls please) MY Barcelona guide… enjoy! xx

p.s: I’ll be sharing my brand new finds and faves on my Instagram feed, so let me invite you to follow enroute of there too 🙂

Thanks for reading!
