I’ll never forget the first time I took back lit shots… it was on a warm sunny autumn day and I was working on a school project with a nice little crew. I took the image as an experiment, looked at my LCD and my heart skipped a beat!!!! WOW! I never made such a pretty picture before (these were the bottom two images above) and I knew that from that shoot on, I’ll always try to incorporate back lit shots in my portfolio! It is a trick that is very very popular these days, but why wouldn’t it be? It takes any images to the next level and provides colors, moods and emotions like no other lighting situation would. Sure it is a personal preference, but as you can see from the abundance of pictures in this post, I’m hooked and I’m doing back lit portraits on every shoot when the weather permits. There is really no big trick here, but you do need to be careful with focusing and a bit of fill light via a reflector or a flash never hurts either! 😉 The best is to shoot in the golden hour (an hour before the sun goes down). I hope you love these images as much as I do and will experiment with this technique more in the future!
