I´ve been brewing this post inside of me for a while. I love to take engagement portraits, love sessions, family pictures and fab lady portraits and I´ve always wanted to have a quick little guide to send to my clients in regards to what to be mindful with while preparing for a session. Don´t get me wrong, I love it when people come with their ideas and shining personalities, but I though a few little pointers could certainly help them out, so dear 2012 clients, these tips are for you! 😉
1. Dress to Success
When it comes to your outfit, the key is to wear something that makes you feel absolutely stunning! It can be that little dress that sits in your closet for ages because you never had an occassion to wear it, that sequin dress that you always felt was “too much” or that little flowery number that makes you feel so cute. The key is to be comfortable with what you wear and proud of yourself! I´d definitely advise you to go all out and make it special! For guys its of course always easier, but just make sure that you wear something casually elegant (I love jeans + shirt + scarf combos) or simply something that is very you (or let´s say the best version of you! ;))
When it comes to colors it´s normally better to keep it simple. I love the way pastel colors look on pictures, but it´s also nice to have one strong color (e.g your dress) and keep the rest relatively neutral. Coordinate your colors with your spoose but try to avoid being too matchy matchy!
Prints are awesome but usually not the best choice for taking pictures. I do love stripes but just be mindful how it can make your body look, but if you feel strongly about your printed shirt, ROCK IT OUT! In general try to avoid strong patterns, busy prints or logos.
Outfit changes… absolutely! Feel free to change as many times as you want, but logistically it´s best to keep it to two max three changes during your shoot!
2. Details Matter
Accessories are great and can add that little something to your outfit… glasses, hats, scarves, jewelry its all great for me, but don´t overdo it, less is more! 😉
SHOES!!!! So so important! Again, I bet you have those sky high lookers in your closet that has been waiting for the right occassion. Bring them on! And don´t forget to put something nice/dressy on your guy too… Notice I said bring them and not wear it? We could be walking around so it´s best if you come in your comfy shoes and change once it´s time to dazzle my camera.
oh and ladies… be careful with your bra straps… they can be real pains on your pictures so if you can hide them great, but if not, try to wear a strapless bra if possible.
3. Hair, Skin, Nails…
This is your shoot and I´m sure you wanna look your best, so if it´s in your budget, a hair/makeup appointment just before the session would be great. I cannot stress enough how much hair and makeup matters on pictures so even if you just jump into a salon for a blow dry, if you can do it go for it! And don´t forget to do your nails and hydrate/moisturize your skin to have shiny, glowy skin on all your pictures.
Try to get a good night’s sleep before your photo session and avoid alcohol. You’d be amazed how easily bags under your eyes can detract from your photos!
Who doesn´t love props? A gigantic ballon or a whole bunch of them… beautiful flowers, a chalk board, baby pictures, lollipops, soap bubbles, your favorite books, magazines, vintage suitcases and cameras, a whole piknic basket with a cute little blanky, your bikes, your rollers, your puppy… whatever it is that makes you smile and feel awesome… bring it along! 😉
5. Location, location, location
In general I prefer if my clients choose their locations for their sessions. Sure I have a lot of ideas and recommendations, but ultimately this session should be about YOU and should be taken in a location that makes YOU feel like a rockstar! 😉 Of course it all comes down to what kind of pictures you want. Some of the most popular places to have a session includes your home (but be mindful that to have stunning images you really need to have a pretty home with lots of natural light), beaches are awesome and always a no brainer and parks are cool as they usually provide lots of photo ops and truly beautiful backdrops for your images. (Poppy field, lavender field, sunflower fields!!! YES YES YES!!!) However if I was to get my picture taken I´d probably go for an unexpected location that is close to my heart. It can be that cute little cafe or cupcake shop, the zoo, the airport, a record store, a cool roof terracce (with a swimming pool! ;D), your favorite part of town to wander around… the possibilities are truly endless and I´d love to work with you to find your perfect spot! Creativity rules! 😉
6. Time of the day
I love to schedule all my shoots around the golden hour (one-two hours before the sun goes down) but it really depends on your location. For inside shoots it´s better to choose a time of day when the most light gets through the window (normally around noon) and sometimes you have to be careful that the sun can disappear early behind hills…etc so let´s chat about your location and we´ll find the perfect time!
I’m so looking forward to my shoots this spring! They gonna be… wait for it… LEGENDARY! ;D
